Prepare the practical points before leaving a rental home

Separate your belongings from furniture and equipment that belong with the home. Use any earlier item notes to identify things that need clarification. Ask about an uncertain item before arranging to take it away.

List keys, access cards and other items to return, without sharing codes or private access details in general messages. If readings or photographs are requested, agree how they will be taken and shared. Keep other residents and their personal belongings out of the record.

Ask who will receive the home and who can answer questions about its condition or included items. Confirm the appointment through the agreed contact before travelling or arranging people to attend.

Make a list of issues you expect to discuss, including any earlier repair concern. Record what each person observed and what still needs a response. Do not assume that the person collecting a key can confirm every other point in the discussion.

Keep the observed condition, any amount being discussed and the next action as separate entries. If there is a disagreement, describe the particular item instead of writing only that the whole handover is disputed.
